IF THIS HOUSE COULD TALK - Blog #14

I like it when the Marysville Community Band plays here. In many ways, it reminds me of other times in the past when music filled my gardens and the streets around me.

There often was band music. The veterans’ band gathered down the street in front of the post office on Decoration Day and marched to the cemetery. When the circus and carnivals came to town, they paraded down Broadway with great fanfare. Marysville celebrated its centennial and sesquicentennial with floats and bands passing along Broadway.

One summer evening in 1889 was particularly memorable. There had been a quartet of musicians playing out on the street. Charles noticed that they didn’t seem to make much of any collection.

At dusk, Charles went to their hotel and learned that they were Germans, a father and three sons. One played the cello, two the violin, and one the flute. He invited them to give us a concert in the garden. He also invited Schmidt and Broughten family members to join us. The concert lasted almost to 11:00 p.m.

It was a grand treat of choice music. Our surroundings were lit by lamplight. The green foliage of the gardens was fine. And outside on the sidewalk there were many who enjoyed the evening with us.

In the photo above, the crowd enjoys a Marysville Community Band summer concert at the Koester House Museum & Gardens last year.
